Water Research Institute (WRI)

The Water Research Institute (WRI) is one of the 13 research institutes of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

It is a public institution and was established in 1996 from the merger of the former Institute of Aquatic Biology (IAB) and the Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) of the CSIR which were established in the 1960s. readmore

WRI warns of health risks

The Water Research Institute (WRl) has expressed concern over poisoning of the country's water bodies with toxic metals and harmful chemicals by illegal miners.

The Director of the WRl, Professor Osmund Duodu Ansah-Asare, who expressed the position of the institute, warned that the practice posed serious health risks to the country. readmore

CSIR pokes action against burning of e-waste at Agbogbloshie.

The Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is calling for a ban on what it calls “primitive recycling of e-waste” due to the hazardous chemicals it produces.
During an in-house review seminar by the institute on 15th March, 2017, one of its Researchers, Dr Kwadwo Ansong Asante, revealed that carcinogenic compounds are released into the atmosphere during the burning of e-waste to retrieve copper and other materials.

Scientist Queries E-Waste Burning

WRI urges government to rehabilitate abandoned Dams

A proposal has been made to government to rehabilitate existing or abandoned dams in order for it to realise its vision one village, one dam. The council for scientific and industrial research (CSIR-WRI), which made the proposal, said: “The majority of such dams are either heavily silted or have collapsed in sections due to heavy overland flows and weak construction.”.
