Water Research Institute (WRI)

The Water Research Institute (WRI) is one of the 13 research institutes of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

It is a public institution and was established in 1996 from the merger of the former Institute of Aquatic Biology (IAB) and the Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) of the CSIR which were established in the 1960s.

Prof. Mike Yaw Osei-Atweneboana is the Director of CSIR-Water Research Institute, he is a Principal Research Scientist with the Bio-Medical and Public Health Research Unit of the Institute. He is a Professor at the CSIR-College of Science and Technology, Accra.

Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom is funding a project dubbed “Life after school'':Championing science/chemistry-related careers” host by the. CSIR – Water Research Institute. The aim is to provide academic mentorship and career support for Senior High School students towards identifying and developing fulfilling careers and academic opportunities. The students were drawn from selected Senior High schools within Accra, namely: Saint Mary’s, Accra High, Accra Girls, Accra Academy, Achimota and Legon Presbyterian Boys. Certificates were awarded.

PRESIDENTIAL HONOURS FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

On March 20, 2023, Prof. Mike Yaw Osei-Atweneboana, Director of the CSIR-Water Research Institute, accepted the Presidential Honours Award on behalf of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. The Institute was recognized for its remarkable assistance in establishing the Covid-19 Laboratory. The Laboratory successfully assisted in managing the COVID-19 epidemic in Ghana through PCR testing.
