Dr Mark Osei-Owusu is a hydrologist and researcher at Ghana’s CSIR-Water Research Institute (CSIR-WRI). He earned his PhD (2025) and MSc (2017) in Water Resources Engineering and Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana. He also holds a BSc in Physics (2013) from the University of Cape Coast and a Diploma in Basic Education (2008) from Peki College of Education.
His research focuses on hydrological modelling, water resources assessment, hydroclimatic variability and extremes, climate change, land-use and land-cover change, sediment transport, and sustainable catchment management. His work integrates hydrological modelling, geospatial and Earth observation techniques, field investigations, statistical analyses, and data-driven approaches to improve understanding of catchment processes and support evidence-based water resources planning and management. His doctoral research examined the combined effects of climate and land-use change on streamflow and sediment dynamics in Ghana’s Pra River Basin.
His broader research interests include rainfall–runoff modelling, the evaluation of satellite and gridded hydroclimatic datasets, streamflow analysis and prediction, drought and flood assessment, irrigation water resources assessment, and the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to hydrological and environmental challenges. His emerging interdisciplinary research explores the interactions among hydrological extremes, climate variability, land-use change, freshwater ecosystems, water security, human well-being, and community resilience. He is particularly interested in developing predictive and early-warning frameworks that translate hydrological and environmental information into practical tools for sustainable water management and improved decision-making.
