Zaid Haruna (RNutr), MSc, is a Public Health Nutritionist and Bioethicist with specialized expertise in research ethics administration, regulatory governance, and public health policy. He serves as an Assistant Research Scientist-Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Water Research Institute (CSIR-WRI) and IRB/IACUC Administrator at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana, where he supports ethical review processes for human and animal research, contributes to institutional policy development, and strengthens compliance with national and international research governance standards.
His professional experience spans the design, implementation, and oversight of public health and nutrition programmes across Ghana, including stunting reduction, maternal and child health, social protection interventions, WASH, and community-based growth monitoring and promotion. He brings strong systems-level experience from work within decentralized health services and research institutions, bridging program delivery with ethical and regulatory oversight.
Zaid’s research and professional interests focus on the ethical governance of clinical and public health research, equitable inclusion of vulnerable populations, and the integration of research ethics with regulatory and pharmacovigilance systems to enhance participant protection, accountability, and public trust. He is actively engaged in capacity strengthening and mentorship, supporting Master’s students in bioethics from universities through structured mentorship, practical ethics training, and exposure to applied research governance. He also mentors early-career African professionals through the Beacon Mentorship Program.
He serves as President of the Ghana Association of Administrators for Research Ethics Committees (GHAAREC) and as Zonal Lead for the Southern Zone of the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND), providing professional leadership, coordination, and capacity strengthening across the zone. He is also the appointed Country Representative for the Africa Bioethics Network (ABN) in Ghana, contributing to national and regional dialogue on research ethics and governance.
Zaid is a co-author of peer-reviewed publications in public health, nutrition, and environmental health, including empirical studies on hypertension and microplastics in Ghana. He is fluent in Ga, Hausa, Dagbani, and Twi.
