Dr. Emmanuel Tetteh-Doku Mensah is a Senior Research Scientist with the Fishery and Aquaculture Division of the CSIR-Water Research Institute in Ghana. He is currently the Officer-in-Charge at the institute’s office in Tamale. He holds a PhD in Aquaculture and Environment from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.

He has over 20 years’ experience in aquaculture research and transformation and related areas such as fisheries stock assessment, fisheries and climate change and aquatic food system initiatives. His research focuses mainly on aquaculture production management, selection and breeding of culturable freshwater fish species, fish-climate models and aquatic food systems analysis.

Dr. Mensah is also a lecturer at the CSIR-College of Science and Technology’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. He has been involved in the curricular design, teaching and aquaculture training module development for post-graduate students, fish farmer groups, Fisheries Extension Officers, entrepreneurs and individuals. He supervises both graduate and undergraduate student’s thesis work in many tertiary institutions in Ghana. He has served as an external examiner to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management of the University for Development Studies, Tamale (2022-2024) and currently a part-time lecturer in the department.

He has facilitated many training programs notable among these are the Healthy Food Africa project training for catfish farmers; Nationwide training on best farming practices for tilapia producers under the Tilapia Seed project; National youth training on Aquaponics based food systems organized by the Agricultural and Productivity Training Centre of the CSIR-Crops Research Institute, Kumasi and the training of beneficiary youth groups involved in the Resilient Aquatic Food Systems project, a CGIAR Food Initiative in North East Region, Ghana.

He has participated in both local and international projects, notable among these are: Technology Transfer of the Nile tilapia strain for cage culture adoption in Ghana; Effects of climate change on Lake Volta resources, a DANIDA sponsored project; Accelerating aquaculture development in Ghana through sustainable Nile Tilapia seed production and dissemination, sponsored by the Netherland Organization for Scientific Research; Development of bacteriophage cocktails as disease biocontrol agents for improved aquaculture productivity, food and nutrition safety in Ghana and Uganda, funded by the African Union and European Union.

Dr. Mensah in recent times was among a team of research experts in the following projects:

• Improving nutrition in Africa by strengthening the diversity, sustainability, resilience and connectivity of food systems project, funded by European Union.
• Resilient aquatic food systems for healthy people and planet project: Piloting small-scale cage fish farming in North East region of Ghana. A CGIAR Food System Initiative.  

Among the notable conferences Dr. Mensah has participated both local and international includes: Ghana Aquaculture Conferences, Ghana Science Association Biennial Conferences, World Aquaculture Society Conferences, CSIR-Research Staff Association Conferences, University for Development’s Institute for Interdisciplinary Research Conferences, 17^th World Lake Conference in Japan (2018) for which his paper, “ Mass Balanced Model of Lake Volta Fisheries: The use of Ecopath Model” was awarded as one of the best ten contents produced at the conference. In 2024, he was adjudged as the best Aquaculture Researcher of the year at the Ghana Aquaculture Conference 2024, organized by the Ghana Chamber of Aquaculture. 

He is a member of the World Aquaculture Society, SARNISSA African Aquaculture Network, Ghana Science Association, CSIR-Research Staff Association and an academic editorial team member for the Asian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research and a reviewer for many local and international peer-reviewed journals including, Ghana Journal of Agricultural Science, The Egyptian Journal of Aquatic Research, Aquaculture, Marine Ecology, Lakes and Reservoirs, Heliyon, Journal of Great Lakes Research, etc. He has over 25 peer-reviewed journal publications, 18 conference papers, 20 technical reports, 22 training manual, 27 extension leaflets/flyers and several media engagement to his credit.
