Mike Yaw Osei-Atweneboana (PhD) is the Director of CSIR-Water Research Institute, and a Scientist at the Bio-Medical and Public Health Research Unit of the Institute. He is a Professor at the CSIR-College of Science and Technology, affiliated with University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Prof. Osei-Atweneboana obtained his PhD at McGill University, Canada in 2008.

He is a Public Health Scientist and Molecular Geneticist, with vast and varied expertise in Medical parasitology, epidemiology and Molecular Genetics of infectious diseases. He has over 20 years’ experience in research into prevention and control of infectious diseases, including water related diseases and neglected tropical diseases as well as application of his expertise in other systems.

His research focuses on: drug efficacy and responses of pathogens to chemotherapeutic agents; development of strategies for control and elimination of NTDs; development of molecular diagnostic tools for detection of pathogens and disease surveillance; investigation into mechanisms and genetics of drug resistance; and Health and Environmental impact assessment. He has established COVID-19 diagnostic and research laboratory with COVID-19 testing facilities to conduct SARS-CoV-2 research in human as well as environmental/wastewater surveillance. He has also deployed his expertise in molecular genetics to determine genetic diversity and population structure of Nile tilapia in the Lake Volta and has identify different strains of Tilapia including foreign strains.

He has supervised post-graduate students including PhDs in Ghanaian and International Universities. He is an external examiner for Universities and reviewer for international peer-reviewed journals. He has obtained many donor funded grants from various funding agencies including the Wellcome Trust, Royal Society and Leverhulme Trust, WHO/TDR, DFID, EDCTP, MRC. He has served and continue to serve on a number of National and International Technical Committees, and boards of Government Institutions, Research and Academic Institutions. He has over 80 publications including 50 peer-reviewed journals in prestigious journals including The Lancet, Proceeding of National Academy of Sciences, USA, PLOS NTDs, Journal of Clinical infectious diseases.
