Ghana Joins the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance
Ghana is proud to be welcomed by the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance as its newest Partner. Following the 2024 All-Atlantic Forum, Ghana formally expressed its commitment to AAORIA through the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Water Research Institute (CSIR-WRI). As a coastal nation with rich marine resources and a strong tradition in ocean research, Ghana brings valuable expertise to the Alliance. “Ghana is proud to join this All-Atlantic Alliance, recognizing this partnership as a strong step toward advancing research and innovation across the Atlantic Ocean, of which Ghana’s coastline is an integral part,” said Prof. Mike Yaw Osei-Atweneboana, the newly appointed AAORIA High Level Board Representative for Ghana and the Chairperson of the UNESCO-Ghana Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
By joining AAORIA, Ghana adds a valuable voice from West Africa and strengthens the Alliance’s geographic reach across the Atlantic basin. Ghana’s participation in AAORIA reinforces a long-standing national commitment to ocean sustainability, championed by a range of institutions including the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Ghana Maritime Authority, CSIR, and leading academic partners. Ghana will be formally welcomed as an AAORIA Partner at the upcoming All-Atlantic Forum in Brussels this September, where Partners will meet to advance on the joint priorities of the All-Atlantic Declaration for a sustainable Atlantic Ocean.
With a long-standing history of engagements and collaborations dedicated to addressing critical environmental challenges and supporting sustainable development goals, the respective government ministries, agencies, research and academic institutions constitute Ghana’s AAORIA team as follows: Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology (MEST), Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD), Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), University of Cape Coast, University of Ghana, University of Winneba, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Unit. This team will ensure coordinated national participation in AAORIA activities and align Ghana’s ocean sustainability and blue economy priorities with the Alliance’s global objectives.
